Match Report

U11s Navy Round 9 vs. Brunswick
We had two milestones today, honouring Kosta Lalogiannis and Greg Sardelis for playing their 50th Games for Beverley Hills, both captaining the team in what was an important game for the boy’s season. As a complete team, we needed to recapture some of the fun and enjoyment we have when playing good football, and we talked beforehand about finding that again in playing the style of free-flowing football that has seen us string some really good passages of football together, knowing the results would come if we did that for the whole game.
The first quarter saw a very good start from the boys, despite being down to 14 players with a late withdrawal, but luckily we had Luke from the U10 team who was able to play an excellent half of football for us. The attack on the ball from the boys was there from the very start, with Kosta, Greg, Giancarlo and Ben in our midfield giving us first use of the ball from the start. Possessing the ball early led to setting up nice passages of play, ultimately resulting in a lovely crumbing goal from Charlie C playing at full forward. With Lawson working hard around the half forward line and getting his hands on the ball, we kept up the pressure the whole quarter and finished with a couple of goals on the board and a strong belief in the level we were playing at.
Our back lines through Oliver, Charlie Mc and Marty “Crunch” were shutting down Brunswick’s forwards very effectively with some good hard play, but we knew the next quarter was going to be tougher again.. We were able to add three more players to the field as Ethan, Tyson and Jai joined us from the Under 10’s at quarter time, and their input for the game was invaluable and greatly appreciated by our team. As expected, we had to battle hard for the second quarter as Brunswick came out with far more intensity than the first, making the most of their opportunities to score goals on the few times they went forward, while we struggled with our shots on goals as the wind made it a bit more difficult despite most of the play being in our forward zone, leading to the scores being close at halftime.
Confidence was high in the boys at halftime though and there was a strong sense of belief that we had the style of play and the intent that could win the game if we applied it for the second half. We discussed really working hard in the third quarter with the aim to take control of the game and put them away if we could, and the boys were very motivated as we took the field for the third quarter. Brunswick came at us again, but with some strong work in our backline through Luis and Lachlan, we denied them any score, working the ball out with our midfielders. We then surged and hit the scoreboard again, Xavier providing some strong drive into our forward line that they struggled to resist.
Our midfielders continued their great form into the last quarter, James finding a lot of the ball reading the play well and increasing the options we had around the ball leading into attack, and once more we held our opposition scoreless while posting a couple of goals to finish strongly.
In summary, a good game by every single player where we played the style of free-flowing football we like to play, with some strong runs and linking football that carried on for the whole game and led to the boys being well satisfied with a four quarter win they can be proud of. That is the sort of game to bring next week against an opposition that has only ever beaten us by setting up a lead with one good quarter of football which we have then been unable to run down in our two previous meetings. If we start the way we did this week and keep up that intensity, then the result should be different at the end of the game, and that’s our challenge to enjoy and have fun taking on this week.
Once more a huge thank you to the Under 10’s – Luke, Ethan, Tyson and Jai – who by playing their second game of the day, enabled us to play our game and were amongst our goal-kickers on the day too. Really a great effort and true clubmen to step up the way they did. Massive thank you to our parent helpers too as it is because of your efforts that our boys can play every week.
